Ruth Margaret
Styne Vanslyke
Sep 11, 1947 — Mar 2, 2021
Ruth Margaret Styne VanSlyke, also known as Ruthie, Mrs. V and Granny or Gran, passed away peacefully at home on March 2, 2021. Ruth was born in Burton-on Trent England on September 11, 1947 to George and Margaret Styne. She met Bill VanSlyke in England and moved to America to be married in the Idaho Falls L.D.S. Temple in 1965. Bill and Ruth moved to various locations in California, Washington, Oregon and Idaho during their marriage, finally settling in Deer Park and having 3 children. Ruthie began working for the Deer Park School District in 1984 as a school aid and eventually worked full time as she implemented and ran the elementary school's Solutions Room where she was instrumental in helping kids learn problem solving skills. She worked for the school district in this position up until December 2019 when she retired, ending a 36 year career. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held various callings in the church, but her favorite calling was as the Primary children pianist. Ruthie loved music, playing the piano, reading anything on the British Royal Family and spending time with her grandkids. This is where she found the most joy. She was the best Granny and often planned themed lunches and parties for them and invented the "princess bath" which became a favorite with the girls. Ruthie had a gentle way of interacting with children of all ages and was loved by those who met her. She unselfishly gave of herself to everyone she met. She listened, empathized and allowed people to unburden themselves of their problems and grief. The countless lives she has touched with her gentle heart will be felt forever. She is survived by many friends and extended family, her husband of 55 years Bill, daughters Connie Larrabee and Kim Minutoli (Tony) and son Billie Joe (Jennifer), grandkids Jake, Maddie, Aeshli, Emma, Cami, Ethny and great grandkids Ethan and Zane, Sisters Muriel (Alan) and Helen (Alan), preceded in death by her parents, sister Shirley and grandson Ben. Funeral services will be held at the Riverside LDS church building on Friday March 12 th at 10 am with internment at Greenwood Memorial Terrace, Garden of Deseret, Spokane WA. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a children's charity in Ruthie's name.
