Lars N
Niemela
Aug 29, 1975 — May 8, 2025
Lars Nels Niemela, age 49, of Deer Park, Washington, passed away on May 8, 2025, in Ellensburg, Washington, as the result of a dirt bike accident.
Lars was born on August 29, 1975, in Monroe, Washington, to George and Gloria Niemela. He was one of thirteen children, growing up surrounded by the love and laughter of his siblings.
Lars found his calling in the woods at a young age, dedicating his life to the demanding work of steep slope logging. Hardworking, fearless, and forward-thinking, he spent his entire career logging across Washington and Idaho. Never one to shy away from innovation, Lars recognized the potential of tethered logging as early as 2015 and embraced it as part of his evolving craft. His deep passion for the woods and profound respect for the forest earned him a feature in Loggers World magazine in October 2023—a moment of great pride for both him and his family.
Lars had 3 children, Sara, Kevin, and Dustin when he met the love of his life, Joy Thomas. They were married on July 21, 2001 and together had three children: Journey, Summer, and Willow. They were blessed with 3 grandchildren, Kash, Laken and Lion. Love was central in their home as they raised their family.
Lars was the brother with all the words—a wonderful conversationalist who connected easily with people and made everyone feel seen and heard. He was adventurous, compassionate, and deeply genuine. Whether dirt biking, snowmobiling, or working in the woods, Lars lived with passion and purpose. He loved the outdoors and, even more so, the people he shared it with.
Lars is survived by his parents, George and Gloria Niemela; his beloved wife, Joy; his six children: Sara(Rick), Kevin(Mindy), Dustin, Journey(Wyatt), Summer, and Willow; his grandchildren: Kash, Laken, and Lion; his twelve siblings; Jarl(Arlene), Lea(Ryan), Elsa(Mark), Brita(Stuart), Derek(Leanne), Jana, Aaron(Jackie), Danny(Ashley), Greta(Zach), Dana(Justin), Jeremy(Brooke), and Alina(Brian). and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends, and members of the logging community. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his brother-in-law, Kevin, Aunt Selma and Uncle Mark.
The funeral service will take place on Thursday, May 15, at 3:00 PM at Indian Trail Church, 9010 N Indian Trail Rd, Spokane, WA.
Lars will be remembered for his big heart, his unshakable loyalty, and his zest for life. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
