Eugene "Gene" Phillips, a man whose strength and devotion was as legendary as his resilience, passed away peacefully at 81 years young on March 12, 2026, surrounded by the love of his daughters and wife. Gene fought a valiant battle against cancer with a courageous, steady defiance. In a final testament to his character, he far outlived the medical predictions given to him, gifting those he loved more time than expected.

Gene was born the youngest of three children  on October 12, 1944 to Agatha Veronica (Carlin) Phillips and Hugh Martin Phillips, growing up with a spirit that was both gentle and remarkably tough. Gene's journey of learning and leadership began earlier than most. Thanks to his Aunt Winnie teaching him to read at a very young age, he entered school ahead of his peers and quickly proved to be a natural math whiz. A proud Havre High Blue Pony, he graduated in 1962, where he was a standout on the basketball court. He continued his education by earning a Bachelor's in Mathematics from Northern Montana College, and later obtained his Master's degree from the University of Montana.

His professional life was defined by his dedication to his students. Though he briefly taught science, he spent the heart of his career as a high school math teacher and a coach of football and basketball. In 1978, Gene married Judith Brunner in Great Falls, Montana, and they began their life together in Havre where their first two daughters were born. The family later moved to Billings and added two more daughters to their home. In Billings, Gene became a fixture at Billings West High School, building a legacy as a teacher and coach while forming deep, lifelong friendships with colleagues and neighbors alike.

When Judi's career took the family to Salem, Oregon, Gene's easy nature and gift for connection remained unchanged; he once again built a community of fast friends through teaching, basketball, and football coaching at South Salem High School. In 2006, Gene and Judi found their "retirement" haven on a beautiful golf course in Deer Park, Washington. However, Gene wasn't quite finished with the classroom, continuing to teach and coach in Spokane for several more years before officially hanging up his whistle.

In his true retirement, Gene was a vibrant presence at the golf course and the local Eagles club. His "mancave" was a legendary gathering spot where he hosted friends from with a beer, a laugh, and recounting endless memories. The roar of laughter from his home was a testament to the man he was, a dedicated friend and a welcoming soul who will be forever remembered and missed.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Judith Phillips, and their four daughters: Jennifer (Tiffany) Pence, Michelle (John) Gersztyn, Kelsie Phillips, and Samantha (Greg Nickles) Phillips. He leaves behind six cherished grandchildren who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Hayes. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Agatha and Hugh Phillips, and his brother, Joe Phillips.

The family would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to his brother-in-law, Mike Brunner, whose extraordinary help and dedicated presence over the final years meant the world to both Gene and Judi. Also a special thanks to the many friends and neighbors on the meal-train whose kindness and care left us so deeply grateful and touched.

A funeral service to honor Gene's life will be held on April 18, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Presentation Church in Deer Park, Washington. A reception will immediately follow in the church hall, where family and friends are invited to continue sharing the laughter and memories.
